Josh Askvig announced today that he is running for a seat on the Bismarck City Commission. "I have long considered public service and I feel now is the right time for me to serve my community," he said. “I have a passion for this city and I look forward to sharing my talents and vision for the future of Bismarck.” Askvig stated that his top three priorities are (1) to promote sustainable growth, (2) provide quality public services, and (3) preserve the city’s history and heritage. “The most important thing the city commission can do is to create an environment that encourages greater economic development,” says Askvig. “Our focus must always be on good paying, quality jobs. But we also have to wisely plan ahead and ensure that Bismarck can sustain and grow in ways that do not further burden property owners.” “Bismarck is uniquely positioned for even greater economic prosperity,” Askvig stated. “We need to promote policies that encourage small business growth. This starts with an iron clad commitment to redeveloping downtown Bismarck. The fact is Main Street has always been the driver of a good economic base for any community.” Askvig also brought up the need for the city to provide quality public services. “It is vital that as we continue to grow that we have good roads, clean water and sanitation services.” Askvig continued, “As citizens we depend on the city build, maintain, and carry-out public services in a timely and prudent manner.” “In recent years the roads in Bismarck have been deteriorating due to the abnormally wet winters,” Askvig stated. “As citizens we depend on the City to maintain and carry out repairs. I feel that the City has to improve its response to fixing those areas in a timely manner so that citizens can see that their taxes are being used prudently.” Emphasizing his commitment to preserving Bismarck’s heritage, Askvig stated: “Bismarck has a strong national reputation as a positive place to live and a friendly, safe community that is great for raising families. I love calling Bismarck home and look forward to raising my children in this great city.” “The values of helping a neighbor, hard work, and community service must be preserved as we continue to find ways to improve the quality of life for our citizens, current and future.” Josh is a third generation North Dakotan who, with his wife Crystal (Wenko) and son McKale, proudly make their home in Bismarck. Askvig is active in the Far West Rotary club and a lector at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
